Right from Denver, Colorado, here they are: Cryogen with their brand new EP “Psalms of Deceit”. Those guys aren’t new to the scene: in 2005 they released their debut full-length “Premonition”, followed by the “This Nightmare” EP from 2007. In Cryogen’s new record, you’ll find 6 tracks of melodic and technical death metal. The band shows impressively good instrumental skills, especially Ryan Conner and Brian Sawyer who know how to play on their guitars and to deliver solid riffs. The guys are influenced by the Swedish melodic death metal school (In Flames, Dark Tranquility) and the technical masters Death and Atheist. Having in mind that Cryogen come from the US, it’s inevitable not to hear some of those breakdowns that are so often used nowadays. But don’t expect to hear boring metalcore. “Psalms of Deceit” offers various and interesting tracks that are able to keep your attention throughout the whole record. So if melodic death metal is your passion, this record most probably will be an interesting experience for you. Hopefully Cryogen will find a serious label to support them. Their music is qualitative and definitely deserves more recognition!
Denver, Colorado death metal in the vein of classic mid nineties Gothenburg mavens as In Flames, Dark Tranquillity and At the Gates. The progressive acoustic section in ‘Man Is War’ is particularly strong, reminding slightly of Sweden’s luminaries Opeth. The re-recorded ‘This Nightmare’ (of their 2007 EP of the same name) has a vibe similar to At the Gates’ seminal “Terminal Spirit Disease”. This is distinctively European in concept and execution and Cryogen are better for it. While not nearly as violent as some of its peers Cryogen deliver the goods with ease. The material on this EP is brutal, engaging, melodic and technically refined. Recorded Summer 2008 at MindCycle Studios. Produced, engineered and mixed by Ryan Conner & Cryogen. Mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (Acheron, God Forbid, Mastodon, Suffocation). Cover art and layout by Phil Fensterer are stunning and fit the release splendidly. “Psalms Of Deceit” is a breath of fresh air in a subgenre that has lost much of its appeal. If you like (later) Amon Amarth, (early) In Flames or The Absence, this is for you.
